Planned Parenthood to Close Four Iowa Clinics Amid Federal Funding Threats

IOWA
May 26, 2025

Planned Parenthood North Central States has announced it will close four of its six clinics in Iowa over the next year, citing serious federal funding threats and growing state-level abortion restrictions. The affected clinics are located in Ames, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, and Urbandale.

This decision follows a freeze in Title X funding and proposed federal budget cuts that could further limit support for reproductive healthcare providers across the country. These closures are also part of a larger consolidation effort that includes four additional clinic closures in Minnesota.

Notably, the Ames clinic is the only facility in Iowa currently offering surgical abortion procedures, making this closure especially impactful for Iowans needing timely and comprehensive care.

While these locations will shut their doors, Planned Parenthood will continue to provide medication abortion in Des Moines and both medication and in-person services in Iowa City. The organization also plans to expand telemedicine offerings in an effort to preserve access to care across the state.

Why This Matters

The closure of these four clinics highlights the growing challenges to reproductive healthcare access in Iowa, particularly for individuals in rural and underserved communities. As more Iowans are forced to travel farther for care—or navigate waitlists and legal restrictions—the role of fact-based, accessible information becomes even more critical.

ICRF remains committed to providing Iowans with medically accurate, up-to-date resources to help individuals understand their options and navigate an increasingly complex healthcare landscape.
